CUPE Members Rally Across The North... Oct. 2005
PRINCE GEORGE—More than 400 CUPE members and other union activists gathered outside Education Minister Shirley Bond’s office today to protest Bill 12 and urge the government to return to the bargaining table to end the prolonged dispute with the BC Teachers’ Federation.
“Bill 12 affects more than just teachers—it affects every CUPE member in the K-12 sector and beyond, and its reach will affect the entire labour movement,” O’Neill said.
“Our message to the minister and the government is simple: it’s time to get back to the table. The government says it wants to see order restored in this province. Well, the best way to see that is from behind a table, bargaining in good faith for a negotiated settlement.”
Following the noon-hour rally, CUPE members joined Prince George area teachers on their protest lines.
Throughout the day all CUPE locals in Prince George were off the job and participating in the rally, including members at the University of Northern B.C.
In Quesnel today most of the CUPE 1050 and 3176 members joined the teachers early in the morning, and continued working on increasing support for teachers all day. At three in the afternoon, several hundred joined a rally in downtown Quesnel.
Elsewhere in the North, all smaller communities with CUPE locals were off the job.
In Terrace, CUPE members along with teachers and the local BCTF president, rallied in front of city hall. CUPE members were also out in Smithers, the Queen Charlottes, Prince Rupert, Kitimat, Chetwyn and Hazleton. Buses were not running in Kitimat, Terrace and Prince Rupert, where municipal and library workers were also out.
In Dawson Creek, there were morning rallies at works yard and city hall. Fort Nelson workers were said to be planning a rally at a seniors centre, while in Mackenzie a candlelight vigil was planned for tonight.
As well, every regional district in the North is out.
SMITHERS - CUPE members from throughout the North joined striking members of the United Transportation Union (UTU) Local 85 for a march this morning in a show of solidarity against the federal government's back-to-work legislation.
Some 76 protesters, including the UTU strikers and CUPE members who drove in from Terrace, Prince Rupert, Prince George, Burns Lake, Dawson Creek and Quesnel showed up for the rally, which was organized by the Northern Area District Council and also attended by staff from Burnaby.
Protesters heard about the issues, ate lunch together and marched through the streets of Smithers while passers by waved and honked their horns. UTU members were said to be strongly affected by the spontaneous show of solidarity by CUPE members from across the north.
The union's job action has focussed mainly on safety and quality of life issues, including time off.
National District Council Conference Well Attended...
CUPE National held the first ever National District Council conference on April 27, 28, 29, 2007 in Toronto. All costs were paid by CUPE National which made it possible for nearly all District Councils to attend from the four provinces which have District Councils.
The conference was designed to show the challenges District Councils are facing from funding , to apathy to low affiliation rates to name a few. the conference also highlighted the work that Councils perform such as educational's. political action and community activities.
From the work done through out the conference, a report will be put forward to the National Executive Board, and from that we hope will come some help for the many challenges faced by councils.
Here are a few District Council links from the CUPE National Website:

All workshops were well attended and all of the delegates seemed to enjoy the time in Prince Rupert. For many delegates it was their first time in Prince Rupert, and many commented on the great hospitality, the beautiful scenery and of course the great seafood served at all of the local restaurants.
The Northern Area District Council would like to sincerely thank Mario Castelli and all of the Volunteers that helped make Prince Rupert a super enjoyable time, and the businesses and City of Prince Rupert for their great service and welcoming attitude.
